Jheri Curl – Hairstyle
The Jheri curl (often incorrectly spelled Jerry Curl or Jeri Curl) is a hairstyle that was popular in general and in the African American community. Past invented and called for Jheri Redding, the Jheri curl the wearer a smooth, loose curly look.
It was “announced, wash and wear” as you say it was easier to care for other than the popular chemical treatment of the day, the relaxer. A Jheri curl was a two-part application that consisted of a softener (often called a “rearranging cream”) and remove the hair, and a solution to set the curls.
The rearranging cream used harsh chemicals to solve the naturally resistant curls causing it to be and hang out. The loose hair was then set to Permstangen and a chemical solution was then added to the hair to permanently curl it.
Perming the hair was time and labor intensive and expensive to maintain. The rough mix of chemicals were required for the process that caused the wearer ‘s natural hair to be extremely brittle and dry. To the eyes of the Jheri curl to maintain, were searching a Curl Activator and heavy moisturizers daily use and requested to sleep with a plastic cap on their heads to keep the hair from drying out. These products were relatively expensive (a typical bottle of activator was small, selling anywhere from $ 3 to $ 6 in retail and was quickly used up.) The activator was particularly the undesirable side effect of being very greasy, this would often stain clothing and all that contact with it inherited. The hair washing, cleaned, it turned to the styling products but also highlighted the damage that the hair was done by the chemical process. Also, while the hair grew out, the carrier would be forced to the hair salon for improving, further adding to the general expenses to come back. The hairstyle went out of the way through the end of the 80en years and was in part by the Hi-top fade haircut replaced.
